National Safety Month: Build a Family First-Aid & Emergency Plan

Hello, Katy families! June is National Safety Month—a great time to swap the batteries in your smoke alarms and freshen up that dusty first-aid kit.

First-Aid Kit Essentials (Check Expirations)

  • Bandages, gauze, antibiotic ointment, sterile gloves
  • Elastic wrap, instant cold packs, tweezers, scissors
  • Digital thermometer, hydrocortisone cream, antihistamines
  • Pain relievers in both adult and children’s doses

Create a Simple Emergency Plan

  1. Family Contacts – Post 911, Poison Control, pediatrician, plus two out-of-town relatives.
  2. Meeting Spots – One right outside your home, another outside the neighborhood.
  3. Role Assignments – Who grabs the kit? Who corrals kids or pets? Who calls 911?
  4. Practice – Run a 10-minute fire or weather drill twice a year—make it a game for the kids.

Summer-Specific Safety Reminders

  • Lock pool gates; keep rescue float and hook visible.
  • Grill 10 ft from the house; keep a fire extinguisher nearby.
  • Helmets on every bike or scooter ride.
  • Leave fireworks shows to the pros.
